AZ Chike, a rapper from South Central Los Angeles, has spent years crafting intense, high-energy material on the underground scene, and now he’s aiming to break into the mainstream. His most prominent moment came a couple of years ago when he traded verses with Kendrick Lamar on Kendrick’s track “Peekaboo.” The pairing suggested a surprisingly complementary chemistry—think chocolate and peanut butter. I’ve already seen some fans lament the absence of a Kendrick feature on AZ Chike’s new major-label debut No Rest For The Wicked, but I wouldn’t worry. AZ Chike has plenty to offer on his own and can elevate his profile without assistance.
Anyway, AZ Chike isn’t exactly working solo. Last month, he joined forces with Tyler, The Creator, who both produced and rapped on the standout single “Look Like My Mama.” Tyler also appears—both as a guest and a producer—on “The World Is Ours,” another track from No Rest For The Wicked. The album’s other guest is JMSN, the singer-songwriter hailing from Los Angeles via Detroit, and the project benefits from production touches by big names like Pharrell, Hit-Boy, Terrace Martin, and Sounwave.
No Rest For The Wicked is marketed as AZ Chike’s debut album, but given his long-running independent catalog, it’s more precise to call it his major-label debut. His early work was characterized by a casual swagger and punchy, braggadocious lines. Here, he leans into something brighter and crisper, yet his ease remains untouched, even in the rare moments when he drops his guard.
