Lay Your Head Down by Paul Smith

October 31, 2026

In 2024, Maxïmo Park issued their eighth full-length record, Stream Of Life. This week, frontman Paul Smith unveils “Lay Your Head Down,” his first solo release in eight years.

“Lay Your Head Down” was crafted in collaboration with Field Music’s David Brewis, and it features Kathryn Williams on vocals and Ed Cross on violin. Smith describes the track as a pleading lullaby written for his daughter but applicable to anyone seeking a moment of reassurance, adding that it’s among the prettiest songs he’s ever written, even as a few darker moments hint at unease.”

The piece exudes a delicate, serene atmosphere, the intimacy of an acoustic ballad. Smith and Williams’ voices intertwine in absorbing harmonies, and the beauty grows as the violin makes a gradual entrance. Listen below.

I write about music as a cultural signal, following the artists, scenes, releases, and movements that shape how people listen today. My work focuses on discovery, context, and the stories behind the sounds that travel beyond borders.
