An industrious Finnish DIY outfit, Letterbombs, deliver a formidable and almost regal interpretation of their metallic screamo. Our own Chris DeVille has a quotable line about how Bandcamp notifications blow up his inbox when they drop new music. Great line, and I’m borrowing it here. Today, the Letterbombs’ expedition through the global underground persists as they join forces with a fellow band for another distinctly cool split release.
Earlier this year, Letterbombs issued PALLA, a split LP with Boston’s Heaven Through Violence. They followed that with a track, “God Is From Texas,” on a three-way split with Italy’s Chevalier and Austria’s the Morning Headcount. Today, Letterbombs unveil another new track on a split with another Italian screamo outfit. This time, it’s Camelia, hailing from Lombardy and previously unfamiliar to me.
Letterbombs’ latest is a bright little number called “I’m Not Here To Enjoy My Life,” carrying all the apocalyptic intensity I expect from them. But the real revelation here is Camelia, whose two new songs demonstrate genuine range. Their first track “Anticipo” arrives as a massive, heavy onslaught with a hardcore breakdown, and their second, “Persona,” unfolds as a six-minute epic with melodic folk flourishes and a new-age recorder.
