Since 2022, Marley Guevara has been releasing dreamy indie-pop under the moniker Maz, even turning Dinosaur Jr.’s “Little Fury Things” into a gleaming synth-pop adventure. Now the Utah-based artist is unveiling her forthcoming EP Loveandpain and revealing the title track.
“Loveandpain came to life with the spirit of my great-grandfather guiding it, drawing on his hopelessly romantic nature,” Guevara explains. “To me, the song pairs love and pain as two sides of the same coin—the deepest sorrow you’ve felt existing beside the deepest joy, and the choice to love fully even when you know love can wound.”
While shaping the EP, Guevara unearthed long-forgotten tapes of her great-grandfather singing and strumming the guitar. She didn’t simply draw on them for inspiration—she also sampled them. Listen to the title track below.
