Approximately a year ago, the enduring Minneapolis indie duo Now, Now dropped an unexpected EP titled 01, and their track “Talk To God” stood out in our minds. Today, the band follows up that release with a new tune, “Slide” — currently issued as a standalone single, though more music is promised later on. “Slide” arrives as a smooth, pulsing synth-pop groove that’s perhaps more polished than anything I can recall from these two artists. In a press release, KC Dalager, one half of the duo, comments:
With “Slide,” we aimed to convey a sense of weightlessness and freedom, the vibe of a roller rink. Confidence. A touch of nostalgia. Not letting other people’s expectations dictate what you do. Lyrically, it’s fairly straightforward and lighthearted. I’ve struggled with feeling trapped by others’ unwanted feelings, so this track stands in opposition to that.
Dalager and her bandmate Brad Hale also co-directed the striking “Slide” video with Tom Thornton, and it follows Dalager as she glides around an otherwise empty roller disco, her eyes glinting with a sense of urgency. Watch it below.
