Olivia Rodrigo has officially released her latest track, Serena Joy, on streaming platforms.
On Monday, the performer known for Drop Dead announced that the song is now available for download, with a portion of the proceeds directed toward her Daisy Chain Fields Fund, which supports nonprofit groups such as Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, and the Center for Reproductive Rights, among others.
“Surprise!!!” she wrote in a caption featuring the lyrics on Instagram. “Serena Joy is out on streaming platforms now. A portion of all net proceeds goes to the Daisy Chain Fields Fund. I love this song so much!!!!”
Last week, the owners of the Analog Record Shop in Orange County, California revealed that Olivia had gifted them 500 CD copies of the track ahead of the launch of her Daisy Chain Fields festival.
“More than anything, we’re grateful for what this represents: an artist building a stage for women in music and raising funds for women and girls,” they commented. “An artist willing to support a local independent record store. And a hometown getting to be part of something really special. That means a lot to us.”
It’s thought the song is named after Serena Joy, a character in Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, The Handmaid’s Tale.
In June, Olivia shared that she decided not to include the track on her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
“I actually really love (Serena Joy). It didn’t fit on the album,” the 23-year-old told Etalk. “The record was very much a chronicle of a relationship — beginning, middle, and end. But I hope that it’ll find a place in something else down the line.”
The Daisy Chain Fields festival is scheduled to take place at Great Park in Irvine, California on Saturday.
Besides Olivia, other artists who have signed on to perform include Chappell Roan, Doechii, Katseye, Mitski, the Breeders, Die Spitz, Bikini Kill, Garbage, Quiet Light, Rachel Chinouriri, Santigold, and Not for Radio.
Karen O, Stevie Nicks, and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan will appear as special guests.
