Back in 2021, Omni’s Philip Frobos issued his first solo album, Vague Enough To Satisfy. Since then, he’s kept busy with the Atlanta post-punk outfit, which released Souvenir in 2024 and is presently marking the anniversary of its debut with a deluxe edition, as you might guess. He’s returned to solo work, and this time it’s offerings of covers for Sorry’s 2024 track “Waxwing” and Jane Birkin’s 1973 piece “Kawasaki.”
“’Waxwing’ and ‘Kawasaki’ had long been on my radar for covers,” Frobos explains. “’Waxwing,’ originally by the elegant and occasionally grotesque band Sorry (UK), features dual drumming from Rodrigo Avendaño (Soccer Mommy) and Jonah Swilley (Revival Season, Mattiel) and was tracked by Avendaño at his studio in Atlanta, GA and mastered by Andy Clarke. I was hooked on the Sorry track from the moment I saw the single press hit Stereogum [Editor’s note: I wrote that post. You’re welcome, Philip.]. I found it to be captivating in its dark humor, contemporary dystopian outlook, and the disengagement that follows.”
“’Kawasaki,’ also recorded by Avendaño, shares similar motifs that spring from a different place and time of societal rejection, apathy, and nihilism,” he adds. “Jane Birkin, Serge Gainsbourg, and Jean-Claude Vannier are household names; Sunday mornings with coffee and eggs, et al.”
