Based in Palo Alto, Remi Wolf began her career as something of an alt-pop singer, yet her trajectory hints at a move toward straightforward pop. Her forthcoming album Mud is slated for release next month, following the earlier releases of the tracks “Twiggy” and “Bottle.” Her latest cut, “I Won’t Cry,” lands as a bold, weathered throwback ballad with threads of country and Southern rock woven through its DNA. The track carries a sizable, theater-like chorus, and Wolf attacks it with clear focus. She produced “I Won’t Cry” alongside Jack DeMeo and Solomonphonic, with the three of them co-writing it with Gigi Grombacher and Jamie McLaughlin. In a press release, she states:
“I Won’t Cry” came out of one of the first writing trips we did in Big Bear for this album, and it was one of those songs that just immediately felt special to me. The three hours it took us to write and record it felt like we were all under some kind of magic spell. I would play the demo for friends, and by the end they’d be crying. I knew it was stirring up something very real in people, and I knew it had to be on the record. It’s sad and yearning and dramatic and kind of pathetic in a way that I really love. It’s genuinely one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, and I’m so happy you finally get to hear it!!!
