The Argentine singer and songwriter Piero, whose repertoire and unmistakable vocal tone shaped generations of Latin music fans, has passed away. He was 81.
His death occurred in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 October and was announced through his official social media channels.
“With profound sorrow we share the passing of our beloved Piero at the age of 81,” the Instagram message read.
“His voice, his songs, and his message of peace will stay with us forever. His light will continue to shine wherever his music reaches. His family and friends thank you for your messages. Safe travels, dear Piero.”
Born Piero Antonio Franco De Benedictis, the artist who would become simply Piero rose to prominence with his debut album Mi Viejo, which included the title track.
A heartfelt tribute to his father, the song is performed at birthday gatherings across South America as the ultimate homage to fathers everywhere.
Mi Viejo, co-written with José Tcherkaski, was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.
In 2016, Piero was honored with a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Piero most recently toured in June of the previous year, marking six decades of his career and eighty years of life with the Piero, Mi Querido Viejo (My Dear Old Man) tour.
