Don’t worry, we’re not going to nag you about every solo release from a BlackPink member. But when one of them drops a proper banger, it’s worth a mention. Rosé, the BlackPink member born in New Zealand, has delivered at least one standout moment outside the group’s orbit. Her 2024 collaboration with Bruno Mars, “APT,” exploded worldwide and remains by far the most successful solo track to come from BlackPink’s cadre. The same trajectory could plausibly greet her new single, “new trick.”
I can’t quite pin down a single, coherent Rosé persona on her own, but “APT” stood out because of its dizzying, new-wave energy, and “new trick” carries a whiff of that vibe as well. It seems Rosé is aiming to ride Olivia Rodrigo’s crest, and I’m not complaining—more artists should chase that wave. Rosé co-wrote the track with Amy Allen—an industry mainstay who’s helped Rodrigo on numerous occasions—and the project was produced by Andrew Wells. The song is a punchy, bubblegum synth-punk blast—hook after hook after hook. It evokes Republica’s 1996 one-off hit “Ready To Go,” and I mean that as a high compliment.
Dave Meyers, a veteran of the format, directed the “new trick” video, and it comes with a strong iPhone-branding wink to signal the shoot. The clip frames Rosé as a suburban rocker, which lands as a pretty funny gag. There’s a moment where she lies along the edge of an empty pool while guys ride skateboards over her, a setup that must have been nerve-wracking for everyone involved. Another moment shows some sparkling pyrotechnics going off in what looks like a high school gym, which seems awfully unsafe. Check it out below.
