Sam Smith is planning to marry fashion designer Christian Cowan.
The performer, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, and Cowan first became romantically linked in December 2022.
Earlier this May, speculation about an engagement intensified when they appeared with a yellow diamond ring at the Met Gala, and in a The New York Times interview published on Tuesday, the Stay with Me artist confirmed the joyful news.
Smith and Cowan’s relationship reportedly began in December 2022.
During the interview, the Lay Me Down star shared that the title of their forthcoming fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes, is inspired by Cowan and centers on the idea of love that is returned.
Meanwhile, the track Everlasting Love reflects the night before Smith’s first date with Cowan.
“For me, there’s something radical about being queer in today’s world and about singing love songs,” the 34-year-old told the outlet. “I won’t let the toxicity I encounter or read about influence how I express love.”
In another moment of the chat, Smith recalled recording the vocals for the new song Oh Mother several times in the studio. “It was the steepest hill and the biggest monster to conquer,” they remembered, noting that they’ve grown accustomed to shifts in their voice: “You hear life within the instrument.”
Hazel Eyes is scheduled for release on 21 August, serving as a successor to 2023’s Gloria.
