Sam Smith’s Hazel Eyes: A Romantic New Album Inspired by a Relationship

July 1, 2026

The forthcoming album from Sam Smith is described as deeply romantic, drawing from their romance with designer Christian Cowan.

The 34-year-old singer and songwriter and the 32-year-old fashion designer have been together for over three years, and Smith has explained that Hazel Eyes, their fifth studio project, chronicles the initial two years after meeting someone you end up spending a long time with.

In an appearance on the Dish podcast, they stated: “I moved to New York to be with my partner. So that, the album kind of soundtracked the move from England to America.”

‘So, you can kind of hear that in some of the music. Yeah, I mean, the one, the first song on the album I wrote about the night before meeting my partner, and then it takes you through the first two years of meeting someone that you’re with for a long time.’

It is a deeply romantic record, and there’s a sense of pride in that romance.

Smith feels a strong sense of pride about the forthcoming project.

They added: “You know, I like flowery, beautiful things, so I’ve leaned into that and I’m just very proud of it. I love it.”

The Stay With Me singer recently shared that their new album, which will be released on August 21 via Capitol Records UK, is “very personal”.

Smith said: “This album is an incredibly special record to me. I have been writing it for over three years with a very small group of beautiful, dear friends of mine.”

“This album is very personal, and I feel I have deepened myself as an artist through the making of it, through being a producer on the record, to walking alongside this record from the start to the finish and pushing myself at every single turn.”

“This record and this music is incredibly romantic.”

And Smith admitted they learned “so many life lessons” while creating their new record.

They added: “I’ve learned so many life lessons through making this album, and I’ve documented it all through the music.”
