Secrecy: A fitting name for a punk outfit, instantly calling to mind the Germs’ “What We Do Is Secret” and the broader vibe of a hidden underground scene that regards outsiders with suspicion. London’s suitably enigmatic Secrecy deliver a big, driving sound—raspy hardcore vocals, reverb-soaked guitar jangle, and booming drums. They generate a sense of frenetic darkness that mirrors goth’s origins as a offshoot of punk, with a hint of Stone Roses’ glimmer threaded through.
Secrecy’s debut EP Winter In A&E is slated for release next month, produced by High Vis members Edward “Ski” Harper and Rob Hammeren. I definitely detect a touch of High Vis in their new track “Knife In My Dreams,” an enveloping rocker that feels lush with atmosphere. The opening line is strong, too: “This is how I sleep, with a fist in my mouth and a knife in my dreams.” Take a listen below.
