Throughout this year, Skrillex has kept himself in motion, dropping a surprise full-length titled SOMA, taking the stage at Bonnaroo, and earning a spot on next year’s Primavera Sound lineup. On Sunday, October 11, he performed a set at Head Trip — a one-off EDM festival in Indio, California curated by the organizers behind Coachella — and the performance reportedly didn’t land smoothly.
On Tuesday, October 13, Skrillex addressed the episode on social media with an apology: “My deepest apologies for my set and sound at head trip. I was having a nightmare myself up there and hate how bad that was for everyone in the crowd. No excuses , will take the L and make a lesson of it.”
A Reddit attendee who attended the festival described several technical glitches that left the sound “really distorted and muddy.” “He also came on late, presumably because they were trying to get whatever issues they had taken care of, he spoke on the mic much less with significantly lower energy than usual, and his mixing style was less dense (more two and three drop playouts) than usual,” the user wrote.
In the days that followed, Skrillex unveiled a remix of Danny L Harle and Pinkpantheress’ “Starlight” crafted with Dutch duo ring noord. “This track is the culmination of so many B2Bs and sessions,” Harle wrote on Instagram, “but mainly Sonny’s incredible ability to blend harmony with drums that simply BANGARANG in your face.” Listen below.
