Slauson Malone 1 Reinterprets Porcelain as a Red Hot Chili Peppers Cover

Three years have elapsed since Slauson Malone 1 (the alias of Jasper Marsalis) issued EXCELSIOR, yet experimental music’s leading solo force returns with its first new material in that span. In a surprising twist, the release is a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover.

The soft, slow, minimal Californication deep cut “Porcelain” is already among RHCP’s more abstract tracks, and Marsalis nudges it even further into the post-Alex G uncanny valley. He croons lines that hint at wasting away in one’s own skin and at missing the love of family, his voice processed to amplify its fragility as if he’s drifting, floating, and fading away…
