Sombr, the indie-sleaze-tinted pop newcomer, is surfacing as one of those rising talents who quickly attract praise from seasoned rock veterans, among them Yungblud and producer Andrew Watt. In particular, Lindsey Buckingham has shown a notable fondness for the artist.
In April, Buckingham offered his endorsement in a video about keeping an open mind toward music: “I love Sombr. I believe he’s incredibly gifted, especially for someone who is only 20 years old.” Then, in August, the former Fleetwood Mac guitarist presented Sombr with the Songwriter Of The Year Award at Variety’s Power Of Young Hollywood event, lauding Sombr’s artistic vision and recalling how taken he was with both the singer and the track when he first heard “Back To Friends” early last year. During a press session around the event, Buckingham noted that they had been in touch and that Sombr had discussed Buckingham’s influence on his music. “There is a wealth of excellent new music,” he remarked, “and Sombr sits at the very top of the heap.”
Now the two have shared a stage. Saturday night at the Kia Forum in LA, Sombr invited Buckingham to join him for a performance of the Rumours-era classic “Go Your Own Way” (after previously welcoming spiritual forerunner Jesse Rutherford to perform the Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather”). Watch footage of Buckingham’s cameo and clips of the elder statesman praising the new talent below.
In other Sombr news, earlier on Saturday he released a star-studded alternate version of his single “Homewrecker,” captured live at Los Angeles’ famed Sound City recording studio. The track, titled “Homewrecker (Reimagined Live From Sound City),” features Nickel Creek (the bluegrass-pop trio of Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, and Sean Watkins), Benny Bock (keyboardist on the new Phoebe Bridgers and Beabadoobee albums), and Sebastian Steinberg (bassist for Soul Coughing, Fiona Apple, and the Nickel Creek offshoot Watkins Family Hour).
