“Lucky Star,” the latest cut from the Bay Area alt-rock pair Sour Widows, isn’t a Madonna tribute. As far back as 2024, Sour Widows released a track called “Cherish,” and that one wasn’t a Madonna homage either. At this juncture, it seems Sour Widows might as well navigate the entire Immaculate Collection catalog and give every title a new spin. The plan appears to be paying off for them.
“Lucky Star” hails from Sour Widows’ forthcoming album Sigil, following the lead single “Blood In The Grass.” (I double-checked: Madonna doesn’t have a tune named “Blood In The Grass.”) Sigil represents Sour Widows’ first full-length since they lost a member and reformed as a duo, and it was recorded with producer Melina Duterte, who performs as Jay Som. The track “Lucky Star” stands as a remarkably strong rocker that climbs to an explosive finish featuring jangly guitars. Below, watch the video, directed by bandmates Maia Sinaiko and Susanna Thomson.
Sigil drops 10/23 on Julia’s War.
