Are you familiar with Purplish? Mdou Moctar’s bassist Mikey Coltun, along with Mark O’Donnell, launched the boutique label a couple of years ago to spotlight curated music from lesser-known corners of the world. Their flagship act is TAKAAT, Mdou Moctar’s offshoot, though their Bandcamp catalog runs deep with other releases just waiting to be explored.
The latest release is a split between TAKAAT and SAICOBAB, the project alias of Yoshimi from the Boredoms and OOIOO. Her sitar-inflected piece “Death Nap The Dance II” manages to be both hypnotic and unruly at once. On the TAKAAT side, the track “Ikapkaban” layers brutal electric guitar textures with a rhythm that lands with a heavy punch, enough to shake the floor.
