Total Wife’s initial tracks already carry the weight of self-remixes, a vibe that feels intrinsic to their sound. The Nashville duo builds a kind of glitched-out shoegaze that draws in a wide range of experimental electronic textures, and their album come back down stood out as one of our favorites from last year. So it’s a natural progression that Total Wife would embrace the remix album format, presenting an EP of come back down reinterpretations slated for release this fall.
If the title come.back.down.x.recovery makes you feel as though you’re about to have a moment, I’d suggest skipping the tracklist below. The EP gathers remixes from four of Total Wife’s neo-shoegaze peers — including Their Julia’s War label mates They Are Gutting A Body Of Water, as well as Winter, Scott Cortez of Lovesliescrushing and Astrobrite, and Full Body 2. In a press release, Total Wife member Luna Kupper shares:
In the weeks leading up to the release of come back down, my hard drive failed. The entire album disappeared, along with half of the new material we were actively working on and numerous other projects I’d been recording. We sent it to a data-recovery service and received back a flash drive containing 25,000 unnamed WAV files. Nearly every file was a rotted muddle of different sounds that had been digitally melted together, as if the hard drive had performed a harsh-noise remix of itself. Any kind of remixing would have been impossible until I found a dusty old drive with half-finished versions of some come back down tracks. Four of those pieces could be recovered and were given new life in collaboration with some of our all-time favorite artists, a miracle I couldn’t have imagined when we were recording. I’m profoundly grateful and I’ve learned I should have better backup habits.
