V.V. Lightbody’s third collection, Period Piece, is slated for release next month, and ahead of it she has unveiled tracks including “Best Problem,” “Practice Smiling,” and “Dull Knife.” The Chicago-based singer-songwriter returns today with a tender new single titled “Two Swans.”
Lightbody explains that whenever she encountered two swans, it felt like a reassuring omen from the universe that she was on the right track. However, as the birds appeared with increasing frequency, she began to question their cosmic potency and recalled that swans are typically depicted in pairs. “Two Swans” examines our culture’s penchant for “magical thinking” while also revealing her own curiosity and enjoyment of divinatory practices. She describes the track as distinctly Chicago in spirit, blending many of her influences — sharp angular guitars, a chorus in irregular meters, and a thunderous Farfisa organ. “Cate Le Bon, but in a cornfield,” she adds.
