Under the stage name Yangze—his nickname since birth—Jakob Littauer stands as Copenhagen’s newest avant-pop breakout. This November, he will release his debut album Heartbreak Stew on the respected Escho label. The record includes the previously issued “Stew” and “Heart-Shaped Eyes,” and it opens with the freshly unveiled track “Okay.”
During his teenage years, Yangze performed with the techno outfit Electrojuice, an experience that earned him the distinction of playing Berlin’s renowned Berghain at the age of 16. He is now part of the TLF Trio alongside Cæcilie Trier. In his solo work, he sings near the top of his range and pushes it even higher, crafting a disorienting ultra-falsetto that sits strikingly amid the fizz and whirr of his futuristic post-genre beats. “Okay” in particular feels like a graceful convergence of indie-friendly electronic pop accrued over the years, drawing lines from Ryan Hemsworth to PC Music to Yangze’s Escho comrades.
