Yr Knives, a Chicago-based instrumental outfit, features Douglas McCombs—best known from Tortoise and Eleventh Dream Day—on bass, alongside other prominent figures in the city’s post-rock scene. They introduced their debut LP Begin Yr Singing with the track “Fear&Trimbling,” a dense exploration of muscular, intellectual noodling that unexpectedly swells into a heartbreakingly expansive orchestral finale. It was magnificent.
On their second single, Yr Knives reveal a different shade of their sound. “Fear&Trimbling” certainly carried a jagged, volatile energy, but the new piece “Stretch Bath” drops the spidery sensibilities in favor of a thick, riff-driven low-end guitar assault. It’s superb in its own right, with its own brand of volatility. These guys rule.
